Well it’s that time of year again. January is generally shit isn’t it?
Christmas has come and gone, there’s no festive markets to visit and no friends visiting just for shits and giggles. You are absolutely skint because you overspent at Christmas and so even if you wanted to go out- you can’t.
You’re feeling fat.
You look outside and the weather is shite.
You’ve ventured to the gym and feel awful compared to everyone else there, so leave immediately.
The seasons really do affect my mood. I love the spring when I can finally start wearing my beloved aviator sunglasses and start having drinks outside; summer BBQs are my fave. I absolutely love the colours of Autumn and the magic of Christmas. But what about this shit part of the year when everyone is a bit lost?
Why are we all feeling like dog shit? What can we do about this?
It’s shit being fucking skint and everyone knows this. However there are things you can do to get yourself out of this situation quicker. You pissed all your money away on Christmas and need help. You’re not alone!
Make a commitment to how much you’re gonna save. Cut back on buying coffees on the way to work this could save you about £700 a year, bring in your own lunch saving you around £1000 per year, stay in and watch Netflix and make sure you’re shopping at Aldi.
You can make a difference in a matter of weeks if you cut back everyday. No one is socialising at this time of year anyway.
My mum always says to me ‘Clara is this something you want or you need’? It’s shit being a grown up but you need to work out what you need to buy in order to function rather than everything that you want, just because it’s nice.
Amelie does a good trick where she will put the odd tenner into a pot, it soon adds up and you can use it when times get tough.
Sell the shit on eBay that’s being hanging in your wardrobe for years. What’s the point in holding on to that dress when you know you only ever wear an outfit once?
I’ve given my bank card to my other half before (I can trust him) and lived off £50 for a week. The key to saving is not hoping you’re going to win lottery because let’s face it, that’s not going to happen. It’s shit, but you can do it!
Here at UF we are positive Polly’s and not negative Nancy’s. Freya is a miserable bitch most of the time which is fine because myself and Amelie pick her up. We are all about ‘positive mental attitudes!’ So try to spend time around people that make you feel happy and pick you up when you’re down.
No matter how shit you feel, know that there’s always someone worse off than you. You are very lucky and should be grateful for what you have. Some people don’t even have shoes, know what I mean?
This is the time of year when everyone has a cold or bug of some form. Wrap up warm. Drink plenty of water. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and aren’t staying up late watching shite (need to take my own advice here!) Have some honey on your toast (research has shown honey can prevent colds, what a fucking winner!)
Carry around some tissues and paracetamol just in case. Prepare!
You may be completely piss poor, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dream!
Where do you want to go on holiday this year?
Is it time to make your next career move?
Why don’t you decide what you want to do for your birthday this year?
Just because you’re skint today doesn’t mean you will be skint all year. If you have a goal it gives you something to focus on and work towards. Make this year the year that you get what you really want. Write specifics points down, how are you going to do this and when?
Mr J and I saved for months and months for a dream trip to Las Vegas. It was hard saving so much money each month but was so much fun researching restaurants, hotels, bars, things to do etc and was something that we could focus on together. By the time we arrived in Vegas Mr J was like a bloody Vegas homing pigeon and was leading me everywhere because he had revised the map with such precision.
I get by with a little help from my friends, and by that I mean a bottle of wine and my best mates. As there’s fuck all going on at this time of the year, make an effort to go and see your old pals and have a drink together. Soon you will be having a laugh and making memories. You don’t even need to spend a lot of money. Aldi’s wine starts from as little as £3.50. Granted it’s not always the nicest but once you’ve downed a few glasses all wine tastes the same anyway.
I enjoy a good game with the girls, something like Uno is good – where we can all get competitive and then get so pissed we can’t remember the rules. I’m sure you know someone who has ‘Cards Against Humanity’, need I say more.
The mornings are dark and cold and you have to get up at 6am everyday which is shit, I understand this. Us brits seem to be obsessed with the weather, I swear I have about ten conversations about the weather per week in the office. In the spirit of Elsa we need to just ‘let it go’ and summon a bit of resilience lads! Get your hat on, brolly up and go face the day. Yes, it’s cold, it’s probably going to rain and the wind is happening big time, but that’s the worst of it. There are brighter days coming, I promise!
This is quite sad but I get so excited about a new episode of the walking dead or Mr J remembering I’m running low on shampoo and buying me some without me knowing. Something making me laugh until my sides hurt, having a bath and some time to myself or running into an old friend. Little things like this really make me smile!
Do you have the blues? What are you doing to overcome this?
We can get through it guys! Spring is coming! Sort of.
